Does my PC have USB 2.0 ports?

Most desktop and laptop computers sold after 2002 are USB 2.0 enabled. USB 2.0 enabled means that the computer has one or more USB-enhanced host controllers. To determine if your computer running the Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating system has a USB-enhanced host controller, follow these steps:

1. Start Device Manager. To do so, click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.

Start Device Manager

2. In the Device Manager window, expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers node. Look for a host controller with the word “Enhanced” in the title. If you find one, your system has USB 2.0 capable ports and has the necessary host controller drivers.

Device Manager window

3. If you do not find an enhanced host controller in step 2, expand the Other Devices section. Look for Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller. If you find this item, your system has USB 2.0 capable ports, but you need to install drivers for this host controller. If you do not find this item, your system does not have any USB 2.0 ports.

Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

What is USB?

Short for Universal Serial Bus, an external bus standard that supports data transfer rates of 12 Mbps. A single USB port can be used to connect up to 127 peripheral devices, such as mice, modems, and keyboards. USB also supports Plug-and-Play installation and hot plugging.

Starting in 1996, a few computer manufacturers started including USB support in their new machines. It wasn’t until the release of the best-selling iMac in 1998 that USB became widespread. It is expected to completely replace serial and parallel ports.

What is USB 2.0?

Also referred to as Hi-Speed USB, USB 2.0 is an external bus that supports data rates up to 480Mbps. USB 2.0 is an extension of USB 1.1. USB 2.0 is fully compatible with USB 1.1 and uses the same cables and connectors.

Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Lucent, Microsoft, NEC and Philips jointly led the initiative to develop a higher data transfer rate than the 1.1 specification to meet the bandwidth demands of developing technologies. The USB 2.0 specification was released in April 2000.

1. Start My Computer, and then go to the folder %windir%system32drivers.

2. Right-click the USB driver file you want to know about, and then click Properties.

3. The version number of the file is shown on the Version tab.

The following is a list of core USB drivers on Windows XP:

  • Usbport.sys
  • Usbhub.sys
  • Usbehci.sys
  • Usbuhci.sys
  • Ushohci.sys
  • Usbccgp.sys

Apollo is perhaps best recognized by its playlist oriented interface. Playlists can be created and modified with standard Windows methods such as drag’n'drop and context menus. The main playlist will be shown as a tree, which may contain nested playlists. This makes it possible to have multiple playlist files open at once, yet having the possibility to handle them as separate entities.

How to use the powerful playlist editor?

    Using the mouse

You may change the order of entries by dragging them from one place to another. To add an item to the end of a playlist, hold down Control key and drop the item on the playlist item.

Clicking the right mouse button on the playlist window or on a playlist entry will bring up a context menu containing a list of actions. Below is a description of each possible action.

Play or double click (on any entry)

Starts playback from the current selection. Holding down Control will cause a crossfade to the selected entry.

Play Next or Alt + double click (on any entry)

Marks the current selection to be the next track to be played.

    Open File(s)/Directory/URL

Opening a file (track, playlist or directory) will clear the main playlist, insert the selected file(s) into it and start playing from the first entry in the main playlist.

    Add File(s)/Directory/URL

Adding a file (track, playlist or directory) will cause the selected file(s) to be appended to the main playlist without affecting the player status. On a playlist entry the file(s) will be appended to the selected playlist.

    Add Random Entry

Adds a new random entry to the main playlist and opens the Random entry properties dialog for it.

    Add New Playlist

Adds a new empty playlist into the main playlist.

Insert File(s)/Directory/URL/Random Entry/New Playlist (on any entry)

Inserting is just like adding, but instead of appending the entries are inserted to the currently selected position.

Incorporate Item(s) Into New Playlist (on any entry)

Creates a new playlist to the selected position and move all selected entries into it.

    Delete (on any entry)

Removes the selected items from the main playlist. Removing a playlist causes all its entries to be removed recursively.

Delete File (on track and playlist entries)

Removes the selected items from the main playlist and physically deletes the corresponding files. Removing a playlist causes all its entries to be removed recursively from the playlist but the individual files are not deleted unless they are explicitly selected.
